説明 | 26 August 2013. Public signs intrigue me. Especially smaller notices and signs mainly there to give information. Do they succeed? I especially like signs which answer questions going through my mind. What happens or used to happen in this place? Why should we be interested or concerned? Best of all, signs which surprise and sometimes even delight. These signs at one entrance to Berkeley Square Gardens are overstuffed with information. There's an interesting street map - from 1792 & 1795. And a copy of the detailed by-laws; which we didn't read and I don't expect anyone else does. But don't worry if you haven't memorised the by-laws because there's also a large-print list of several Don'ts. Among them in in block capitals: SORRY NO BALL GAMES and NO CYCLING. One banned activity gives a clue to the age of the sign: NO RADIOS OR TAPE MACHINES. (Remember them?)There's a brief history of the square - mentioning the names of the famous and important: Lord-this and Lord-that. And some less famous, though probably more important, but unnamed residents. Like the carpenter, wax chandler, woollen draper, undertaker, distiller, hosier, tailor, and apothecary who once sold their goods there. |
