説明Sir Robert David Muldoon was born on the 25 September 1921 in Auckland. He served as the 31st Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1975 to 1984. Muldoon had been a prominent member of the National party and MP for the Tamaki electorate for some years prior to becoming leader of the party. During his time as a member of parliament and as Prime Minister, Muldoon was responsible for a number of major changes to the New Zealand economy, including the introduction of decimal currency. He led the National Party to election victories in 1978 and 1981. He was Knighted in the New Years honors in 1984 and became the 2nd New Zealand Prime Minister to be knighted whilst still serving, following in the steps of Sir Keith Holyoake. Muldoon retired from Parliament on 17 December 1991. His retirement party featured taped speeches from Ronald Reagan (commenting that at Muldoon's age, he was only getting started) and Margaret Thatcher. He fell seriously ill almost immediately, and died in hospital on 5 August 1992, aged 70. He is buried at Purewa Cemetery, Meadowbank, Auckland in a plot that faces Auckland City.Four of the five images presented here are from the personal papers and photographs of Robert Muldoon. These photos, along with photograph albums presented to Robert Muldoon to commemorate official visits and engagements and official and personal correspondence were donated to Archives New Zealand by Lady Thea Muldoon, wife of the late Robert Muldoon. Other items of interest in this series of records include: photographs of Muldoon and US President Ronald Reagan; Queen Elizabeth II on the opening of the Beehive in Wellington and a letter of thanks from the Duke of Edinburgh. The image of Muldoon and Mao Tse-tung is from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. These photographs can be viewed in our Wellington Reading Room.Archives References1.
