説明 | Many of the windows at Earl Stonham date from the 14th C. and are in the Decorated style. They exist in the chancel and transepts, as might be expected, but even in the nave and at the west end in the rebuilt 15th C. Perpendicular tower, where the 14th C. west window was reused. I am a slightly suspicious of this one, however. The pattern of its tracery is identical to the east window of the chancel, which is known to be a 19th C. replacement. Perhaps the east window was copied from this one, but despite the ogees and trefoils I find something a bit "rigid" or "formal" about the pattern that does not ring as authentic. The sharp points of the cusps certainly don't look old, although they may, of course, have been recut. Just thoughts on what is still, I think, a handsome window, whatever it's age. |
