説明 | Last night a small group of Onion loyalists and mourners gathered at Brittingham Park in Madison, as per the newspaper's dying wish, and set fire to the world. Which is to say, we lit a shitty charcoal fire, burned a copy of the final print edition, played a hilariously inept game of softball, then each went around and told stories about how we first discovered the Onion, our favorite stories from it, and how some of us came to work/play for the organization. All while sharing an illicit bottle of champagne. It's what the Onion would have wanted, I think.I had the pleasure of being a ringer for Team Onion softball from 2000-2004, because a friend of mine interned for them at the time (when they still had offices in Madison). It meant I got to meet and befriend a number of the late great Onion staffers, be part of the infamous Chicken Bowl, and various other shenanigans, for which I will always be grateful.Losing the print edition of the newspaper in Madison feels like the end of an important era, both for the city and my own life. |
