説明 | The principal of DeLena Day School died, and the school had trouble raising funds, so my parents enrolled me at the only other black-run private grammar school on the south side, Howalton Day School.Founded in 1948 by three public school teachers who had tired of dealing with the overcrowding in black schools and an uncaring bureaucracy, it had been in this building only a few years when I started there. The color scheme has changed from light blue to maroon, and the V-shaped Googie-inspired awnings have been removed from the roof of the Dearborn Street side, but other than that, little has changed from when I went here almost 50 years ago. One huge external change: The highrises of Robert Taylor Homes used to loom to the north and south of the school. The kindergarten, 3rd, 4th, and 6th grade classrooms faced west toward the New York Central/Rock Island railroad tracks, and I used to gaze out the window, watching those sleek trains glide by and wishing I were on one of them going somewhere, anywhere than where I was. |
