| 説明 | Archaeologists sometimes do a lot of "reconstruction" on important sites opened to public viewing, inevitably that might on occasion amount to intelligent guess-work rather than factual certainty, but here at Skara Brae; the homesteads were preserved in sand for thousands of years which kept the upper walls intact. This relative stasis lends a great deal of certainty to what we see here of neolithic-man's domestic organisation, being pretty faithful to how things would have been arranged in the stone-age. Fireplace, hearth, sleeping-cots, storage and food cupboards, with these they had all the essentials covered. A set of needs unchanged since men stood upright and began that long slow walk to modernity. But how humbling it is to view these early proofs, to consider the lives lived within these walls and to reflect that some of them; at least, reached this level of human-security. Though none of them were to know anything beyond it. |
