説明 | In 1968, G-AMAD was converted to a freighter at Southend, with a large door in the port side and stalls for racehorse transport. It made it first flight after conversion on 10 Jun. On 3 Jul 1968, inbound at Heathrow from Deauville with 8 horses, 5 grooms and 3 flight crew, a sudden fatigue failure of a port flap actuating strut caused it to bank and roll, then career out of control across the airport. It collided with parked and empty BEA Tridents G-ARPI and ‘RPT, slicing the tail fin off the former and wrecking the latter beyond economic repair, before crashing into a Terminal 1 building, then under construction. Two of the grooms somehow survived. My photo was taken at Southend in Nov 1966, when the Ambassador was still in passenger-carrying configuration.Photo: Richard John Goring (Transportraits) |
