説明 | I can't figure out what Caulanthus this is. Photo taken at a rocky overlook off Hwy 108 at 7400', growing in the rocks with a scraggly Mountain pride penstemon (Penstemon newberryi) nearby. No Caulanthus are reported in Tuolomne county. I'm missing what the basal leaves look like, but "1' Cauline leaves sessile, …; 9' St not inflated" seems accurate. Making the decision 10' because it's not C. californicus, it satisfies "11' Infl without a terminal cluster of sterile flowers" and "13. Plant glabrous throughout." This takes me to C. amplexicaulis, with a northernmost distribution of Tulare county. The elevation and Yellow Pine Forest communities are consistent, though. If i ignore the obviously sessile cauline leaves, and go with "1. Cauline leaves petioled or occasionally ± sessile," I end up with a choice of C. glaucus or C. major. C. glaucus is in the wrong community (Pinyon Juniper). C major has a distribution as far north as Mono, right community & elevation, but the photos don't look much like it. I like C. amplexicaulis. Any ideas? |
