説明 | In 1780, Galvani accidently discovered that he could make the legs of dead frogs twitch by applying an electrical charge to the bare nerve. It was a turning point in both biological and electrical research, and sparked a fruitful controversy between Galvani and Volta that culminated in Volta's discovery of his voltaic pile, the first electrochemical cell. Galvani eventually got tired of arguing with Volta about whether the frog's twitching should be ascribed to animal electricity or to the external presence of metals (in hindsight, Volta's explanation of the experiment was correct, but Galvani's hunch about the body's ability to provide electrochemical impulses without being plugged into external metal power sources was sort-of-right too). He went back to teaching and doctoring, and died in poverty after refusing to swear an oath of allegence (required of academics) to the napoleonic Cisalpine Republic. |
