説明 | Painted in Rome, Italy 1538-9. Exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Lazarus, a dear friend of Jesus and brother of Martha and Mary had been in the tomb for 4 days. Martha went to meet Jesus. "Lord, if you had been here my brother would not have died". Jesus said "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die - do you believe this?" Jesus asked where they had laid Lazarus. "Come and see, Lord", they replied. Jesus wept. Jesus told them to roll away the stone, despite protests from Martha. Jesus said "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the Glory of God?" "Lazarus, Come Forth!" he called in a loud voice. The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped in strips of linen with cloth around his face. After this miracle many witnesses put their faith in Jesus but the Pharisees saw him as a threat to their place in Roman society and plotted to kill him.In 890, a tomb was found in Larnaca bearing the inscription "Lazarus the friend of Christ". Emperor Leo VI of Byzantium had Lazarus' remains transferred to Constantinople in 898. Church Orthodox tradition tells of Lazarus having to flee Judea after the resurrection of Christ due to plots on his life and he came to Cyprus where he was bishop, living there for 30 years before dying and being buried a second and last time. The Church of St. Lazarus is erected over his tomb. |
