説明 | The Morritt Arms sits adjacent to the A66 a few miles west of Scotch Corner. I cant quite afford to be a regular here but I pop in every couple of years or so just to admire the mural. The Morritt Arms (and or its predecessors - there have been three Inns at Greta Bridge) has played host to Sir Walter Scott, Charles Dickens and the painter J.M.W. Turner among others. Scott's poem: Rokeby, was published in 1813 and dedicated to J.B.S.Morritt the owner of the Rokeby Park estate and this hotel which bears the family name to this day. Is it just me? or can you see a likeness between the patrons with their backs to wall and the Dickensian characters in the painting? This mural was painted in 1946 by Jack Gilroy the artist who produced the Guinness Toucan. |
