説明 | More self-inflicted black and white photography... George put an F engine in a Mickey Big-mouth bottle, with fins glued to the neck. Elegant. Grain direction on the fins was parallel to the line of flight and all 4 sheared off at about the same altitude - say 10 feet / 3 meters above ground level. Then it tubled end over end while still making thrust. But it went over 100 - mmm feet? Yards? A long way and far further than any 'failure' would have gone. Bottle recovered safely.I found 7oz (contents) Miller and Michelob bottles, fitted one into a pair of styrofoam cups, at the end of a standard Estes 20" (50cm) paper tube. 1/2 ping-pong ball for aerodynamics. I had an F-100 booster and an E-7 sustainer, 2 stages. Pretty cool except the E-7 didn't push it hard enough to keep it going upward... so it slowed and slowed and pretty soon was heading down, toward the ocean, with the engine still pushing it! Splat! We didn't see it hit the water but it washed up about an hour later. Bottle intact, so our recovery rate was 100%. Much easier than eggs.Somewhere in the 1980-1985 time frame. |
