説明 | A first for me to catch this blooming, although I had seen the distinctive palm shaped many lobed leaves last year. They often don't fully emerge until after flowering. I found it growing on a steep southern facing slope with rich soil in the thin slice of deciduous woods which runs along a stream where a trail connects Connecticut avenue to Rock Creek Park, one of the largest urban natural parks in the USA. The seeds of Sanguinaria canadensis are distributed by ants, and thus it does not spread easily and is usually only found in relatively good quality undisturbed areas. The narrow stream valley where I found this flower is surrounded by apartment buildings on both sides, how fortunate that the area along the stream itself was not destroyed when this area was developed. I noticed several small patches of these plants, most were not flowering yet. |
