説明 | Native, yearlong green, perennial, erect, tufted grass to 2 m tall. Leaves are up to 6 mm wide and 40 cm long. Sheaths and leaves are ribbed and generally hairless. Flowerheads are open panicles. Spikelets are 1-flowered with 2 well developed glumes. Lemmas are hairy, golden brown to dark reddish brown at maturity, spindle-shaped and 6.5-8 mm long; with a short callus, the coma is less than 2 mm long and the terminal awn is twice-bent (straight when young) and 3-4 cm long. Flowering is mostly in spring and early summer. Found on clay soils, it prefers good moisture, high fertility, and neutral to alkaline soils. Sensitive to heavy frosts, but drought tolerant. Native biodiversity. Not abundant on the tablelands and is more readily grazed by cattle than sheep. Of moderate feed quality for livestock when vegetative; but low quality when flowering. Seeds can cause injury to stock, especially sheep, but not abundant enough to cause serious problems. Tolerates heavy grazing, but occasional resting at flowering will aid persistence. |
