説明 | Seen at Udvar-Hazy Center, the annex of Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, located on the grounds of Dulles Airport. This four-engined transport, known as "Dash 80," which Boeing built at its own expense while waiting for a US Air Force contract, made Boeing the leader in jet powered transport aircraft. Boeing built a version of this aircraft as the C-135 transport and sold it to the Air Force, while Air Force had been waiting for Lockheed to design its proposed C-193; the Air Force, after using the temporary C-135s, later dropped the C-193 contract and acquired more C-135s. Hundreds were built, mostly in the form of KC-135 tanker.Boeing also wanted to sell this aircraft as an airliner. Pan Am had Boeing redesign the aircraft, widening the fuselage for six-abreast seating among other changes, and the Boeing 707 was born. The 707 went on to revolutionize air travel, and Boeing's lineup of "seven" airliners have all become successes.Boeing continued to use this prototype as a technology testbed until retiring it in 1972 and donating to the Smithsonian. Stored in the Arizona desert, the aircraft was retrieved in 1990 and sent to Boeing Field for restoration, and in 2003 finally came to Udvar-Hazy.N70700, Boeing 367-80 prototype |
