説明 | Scenes from a verification training exercise. The handheld Cerenkov Viewing Device (ICVD), such as those seen being used in this photograph, is an image-intensifier viewing device sensitive to the ultraviolet radiation which can be found in the water in which spent fuel is immersed. The viewing device can operate even with facility lights turned on, as the ICVD is optimized for ultraviolet radiation. Most of the visible spectrum is filtered away, while the device is equipped with an image intensifier tube primarily sensitive to ultraviolet frequencies. The aim of the comprehensive inspection exercise was to train IAEA Safeguard inspectors in real-life scenarios. The exercise took place at Slovakia's Mochovce NPP on 17-21 January 2005.
