説明The Scottish Police College (SPC) is a relatively recent innovation. Initially Whitburn was used for Basic Training from 1947 while Tulliallan Castle was made ready for such courses in the 1950s. Today all police officers in Scotland receive their Elementary Training at SPC. Prior to 1947 however things were done on a regional basis, with Glasgow City Police being one of three forces in Scotland which conducted approved training for officers of other Forces too.So it was that Constable Roderick H. MacKay of the Sutherland Constabulary underwent TEN WEEKS training at Glasgow's Training School. Doubtless, that would have been an eye-opener for him, coming from the relatively tranquil location of Dornoch and learning alongside officers from various parts of the "No Mean City" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Mean_City (published 1935). It is likely that Glasgow officers would attend such training very early in their careers, whereas PC MacKay had already served in the Sutherland force for precisely one year before attending this course. He joined the force at Dornoch on 7th February 1935, and would presumably have started the course at the beginning of February the next year. This could have been because there was a waiting list - but possibly (probably) since there was no point in the Sutherland Force spending money on the course if the recruit was not going to stay in the job. Although most recruits did last, it would not be the first probationary officer who very quickly found out that the job was not for them. Indeed, successful attendance at this course was liable to have been the final hurdle before the officer completed his probation.Changed days from when I joined in 1973. I started one Monday, and 7 days later was at Tulliallan on my Elementary Course (then of 4 weeks duration) - I seem to recall that a couple of my classmates (from other forces) made a career re-assessment mid-course and did not come back after one weekend. After a year’s service (probationary period by then was 2 years) it was back to Tulliallan for me, to undergo 12 weeks “Second Stage” Training. How I loved those 3 mile runs (NOT!)Constable MacKay went on to serve in Sutherland Constabulary for 18 years before resigning, aged 38, in 1953, Unfortunately no other details are provided in the Register (but chances are he found a better-paying job elsewhere) - nor does it show any other postings, but it is difficult to believe he served his entire career in Dornoch. The Force Register was not however completed in such meticulous and contemporaneous detail as it was in larger forces in the Highlands.Hopefully his training in the variety of subjects in the syllabus stood him in good stead –  Police duties Reading Dictation Arithmetic General Knowledge Drill Physical Training Jiu-Jitsu Road sketching Testing Motor Brakes Swimming and Life Saving Ambulance (i.e. First aid) Traffic Signals and Wireless Telegraphy
