説明 | There is no significant correlation between the population of a state and it's murder rate per 100,000 population. It is less than a 0.2% match. This contrasts with the very strong correlation between population and total murders, as seen here:flickr.com/photos/91128695@N07/8282980513/That comparison is a good demonstration of why you should always use rates per capita when comparing jurisdictions of different population. This chart is also a good example of an outlier, as DC's murder rate is clearly different than those of the 50 states for the entire period covered by the data. Clearly some unique factor is dramatically increasing murder rates per capita in DC that is not affecting the states. |
