説明 | ellenbog1[4]93kalb[Dated 15th-century autograph of Nikolaus Ellenbog (1481-1543), German humanist and theologian. Son of the physician and humanist Ulrich Ellenbog of Memmingen, Nikolaus studied at Heidelberg, Cracow and Montpellier before entering the Benedictine abbey of Ottobeuren in 1504. He served in various offices there, including prior, cellarer and novice master, and oversaw the operation of the abbey's printing press. He carried on a lively and well-preserved correspondence with other European humanists, including Erasmus (of course). Cf. his entry in P.G. Bietenholz and T.B. Deutscher, Contemporaries of Erasmus (Toronto: U of Toronto Press, 1985-1987), v. 1, p. 428, and in F. Posset, Renaissance Monks (Leiden: Brill, 2005), p. 155ff.The work in which this autograph appears, Johannes Melber's Vocabularius praedicantium (Augsburg: Anton Sorg, 20 May 1489), was probably one of Ellenbog's schoolbooks. (The note "kalb" likely refers to the compiler of the Vocabularius, Jodocus Eichmann de Kalb.)Established heading: Ellenbog, Nikolaus, 1481-1543Established heading: Eichmann, Jodocus, 1420?-1491]Penn Libraries call number: Inc M-467All images from this bookPenn Libraries catalog record |
