説明 | Native warm-season perennial tufted C4 grass; stems are erect, rounded at their base and grow to 120 cm tall. Leaves are hairless, except along their basal margins. Flowerheads are sparse, narrow, contracted panicles to 40 cm long; branches are short, stiff and pressed against the main stem (which is visible for much of its length). Spikelets are 1.5 mm long, 1-flowered, unawned and dark grey-green. Flowers from spring to autumn. Found in native grasslands and woodlands on low fertility well-drained soils; often occurs in association with Red Grass. Native biodiversity. Drought tolerant, but sensitive to frost.High plant densities can be an indicator of long- term overgrazing of more palatable species. Not readily grazed by stock, its palatability and digestibility are low to moderate when young and low at flowering. Low yielding and unresponsive to fertiliser. Favoured by set stocking due to its low palatability, its abundance can be managed by using grazing and fertiliser strategies that favour better quality grasses. |
