Soldiers had leather shoes but they were very expensive so they wear wooden shoes when they weren't on duty. They had a hard life, were given a thick bread and had to cook their food over the fireplace. They were given dried vegetables, salted pork and dried cod fish but could also hunt for other meat. They made little money as a soldier but could make extra money building houses and other things in the town. |
