説明This recently installed sculpture is outside the Libraray in Emersons Green, South Gloucestershire. It is one of two that were designed and made by Scott Farlow and Steve Joyce, two Bristol-based artists. The other is outside Sainsbury's Supermarket and can be seen here.Steve Joyce explain the sculptures meaning:"The main inspiration for this two-part sculpture is the idea of a large underground reservoir of hidden and untapped knowledge and information that majestically bursts up through the ground, like a geyser or fire hydrant, and takes the diminutive library building with it."Though elements of harmony and balance are evident, they may not come immediately to mind when looking at the sculptures. For these are dynamic, yet slightly uncontrolled, thrusts – much like present day mass data is."The distinctive steel sculpture point towards and identifies the location of the library – that vast hub of data, ideas, knowledge and information and a portal into a world of potential, learning and exchange."Fountain of Knowledge suggests transformation and growth, energy and movement, hope and optimism. The sculptures symbolise what we might find if we look hard enough and that much of what we are looking for, although hidden, obscured or shrouded in mystery, is not actually that far away."The sculptures possess an intentionally wry, almost cartoonlike humour. They combine the textural quality of surface 'shading' that resembles pencil drawings on the sides, with strong and flowing three-dimensional forms. In addition the two sculptures are a 'story board' that describes fhe two different stages of the 'geyser'."Fountain of Knowledge thus elicits intrigue and surprise and expresses hope and potential. Their presence, scale, shape and beguiling elegance will arouse curiosity, spark conversation, demand closer inspection and invite touch."Sourced from Downend & Mangotsfield Matters, Sep 2012.
