説明 | The White Horse Over Avebury CoveRime lends sarsens a chalky hueIn moonlight: squat stone and tallGaunt in the field. Micrasters clusterAround the heart of the White Horse. The ash tree wears its own crustOf frost, the twigs brittle, upturned.Beyond ditch and rampart, the churchIs founded on split sarsens, its fontEtched with dragons, each subduedBeneath a bishop’s feet, his crozierRaised as if to deal a fatal blow. The White Horse sees Pagan and ChristianFrozen in stone, each household, walledWith sarsens, turned inwards on its hearth.Earth is dormant. Chalk horse, fossils,Flint, stars, frost: these breathe and live.Poem by Giles Watson, 2012. Avebury is a gigantic stone-circle and henge complex, not far from Marlborough in Wiltshire. The village which now nestles amongst the ditches and ramparts was largely built out of demolished sarsen stones. The iconography of the font inside Avebury church is often interpreted as a representation of the battle between Christianity and paganism. Micraster is a genus of heart-shaped sea-urchins, which flourished in the oceans which covered this part of the globe between the Cretaceous and the Miocene. |
