説明 | Although the north transept is literally in ruins, the south transept's walls and window tracery are intact, and there is no evidence that was ever finished. The church, begun in 1320, was nearing completion in the 1340s, when the Black Death (bubonic plague) killed half the population of England and is known to have caused the deaths of St Margaret's master mason, William Ramsey, and his son. Many activities of English society, including church building, were disrupted for several generations. (See www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/cley/cley.htm.) |
