説明 | I visited this junction . i was horrified that I almost went under bus no TA647 as it shot a pedestrian crossing for which I had a green right of way for pedestrians and cyclists. It seems to me that a bus or car has a right of way and after a sudden 180 degree turn there is a poorly visible (it has directional vanes on it) traffic signal which may very well be at red. It needs to be ascertained whether the green right of way at the pedestrian crossing coincides with a right of way at the eastbound stop line on Eastway. If so, then this is a very serious traffic engineering design fault, especially since vehicles turning 180 degrees at perhaps 20 mph have a limited time and visibility to react to a sudden red phase immediately after a green light. Or had TA647 gone through two red lights? He was clearly trying to overtake the bus.“There was no space between the pavement and the bus. The collision was inevitable.”Mr Harris’s father David spoke to describe the cyclist as “a perfect son” who “enjoyed life”.He added that Daniel was planning to get married to girlfriend Cecilia Dominici, who was present at the inquest.The court also heard how Mr Harris, from Ilford, would have died “instantaneously”, as the cause of death was given as a combination of traumatic injuries.Bus driver Derek Buckland told the inquest how he had been ferrying journalists from the Olympic media centre to the Excel Centre.At around 7:30pm, he pulled up at traffic lights on Ruckholt Road and was making a left-hand turn onto the A12 dual carriageway. “It’s such a tight turn so I positioned off the kerb”, he said.“I wanted to turn left. I moved out on the right to allow myself to make the turn.“When the lights changed I did a slow turn. I heard a noise as I was turning and somebody told me to stop the bus.”Pc Darren Case, of the Metropolitan Police’s road death investigation unit, said it was clear from CCTV footage that “Mr Buckland did everything he could have done in his power to follow signs”.He added that it appeared that Mr Harris was not visible when Mr Buckland had checked his mirrors.The coroner, Dr Richard Brittain, returned a verdict of accidental death. |
