説明 | Entering the old city walls of Sorrento.Going from Piazza Antiche Mura down Via Antonio Sersale. As you walk under the arches, you pass Il bastione di Parsano. It wasn't open when we first walked past it, but a few days later, we past it one evening, and the gate was open.SORRENTO could count on a solid defense provided by an impressive city walls since Roman times, however, only in much more recent vintage walling the city looks the still partially preserved.Being exposed to the risk of Saracen raids, especially during the sixteenth century ravaged much of the seaside towns of southern Italy, the city - during the period of the Spanish Viceroyalty - was at the center of intense activity aimed at ensuring a massive defensive system of the town. From the early sixteenth century the Roman walls, restored several times during the Middle Ages, was completely renovated and rendered impassable in fact ...Sign's outside "Il bastione di Parsano". Wasn't sure if they were plaques or not.Didn't read them at the time. |
