説明This shot, like all the others in this series, showcases the colorful rocks of Capitol Reef National Park in Utah, along the Waterpocket Fold, one of the longest exposed monoclines in the world. Rocks mostly range in age from 270 million (Permian) to 70 million (Creaceous) years old. Most of these strata were laid down in the Mezozoic, better known as the Age of Dinosaurs. Since all the strata that comprise the Grand Canyon are older than any of these, Capitol Reef makes a fine companion suite of younger rock. The pale spine of the reef is Navajo Sandstone, comprised of fossilzed sand dunes formed in a vast Jurassic desert. The rock of Zion National park and the Red Rock country west of Las Vegas (known locally as Aztec Sandstone) are remains of the same desert. In Capitol Reef, rocks to the east (right on this shot) are younger while rocks to the west are older. For more about Capitol Reef geology, go here. The notch in the rock is Oak Creek, running through Bear Canyon.
