説明 | The William E. Drummond House in River Forest (1909). William Eugene Drummond attended the University of Illinois School of Architecture, but had to drop out for financial reasons after one year; however, he did meet fellow aspiring architect Walter Burley Griffin there. Drummond joined Adler and Sullivan, but left after a few months to join the burgeoning Frank Lloyd Wright. Drummond was Wright's chief draftsman for many of his important projects, including the Cheney House and the Robie House. He worked for Wright part-time from 1901 to 1905, and full-time from 1905 to 1909. Drummond also worked for Daniel Burnham from 1903 to 1905. He was one of the seven draftsmen that worked under Wright and became part of his Prairie School movement. In 1910, Drummond designed and constructed his own Prarie Style residence next door to the Isabel Roberts Home, a Wright work. Drummond began his own practice in 1909. Drummond's house is one of the earliest examples of a Prairie Style house designed by someone other than Wright. While his house is considerable smaller than most Wright works, Drummond's house is otherwise architecturally similar to Wright's contemporary designs, specifically the Fireproof House for $5000 design. |
