説明 | Technicians prepare to examine and coal the locomotive. Coaling is a manually done tedious process with men collecting coal in a indented bowl, then walking up the locomotive, climbing onto its various protruding parts and handing over the bowl to the chap standing on the locomotive (seen here right at the top) who then empties the bowl into the tender and hands the bowl back to the chap who brought it in. And there are just two or three chaps actually taking the coal up. It's tedious work but for a locomotive this size, with a small coal bunker rather than a large tender, it doesn't take too long. Locomotive is DHR's standard B class 0-4-0ST. (May 2009) |
