説明 | We are almost done with Kbal Spean now, so here are a couple of parting shots. This picture shows Kbal Spean carvings on the bedrock- they are believed to cleanse the waters of the Siem Reap river as it flows over them before it pours into the Tonle Sap lake, several km away. I am at Kbal Spean, one of the scores of Angkor era religious sites which dot the countryside around Siem Reap, Cambodia. Known as the River (or valley) of 1000 lingas, Kbal Spean is known for the 1000 lingas carved on the bedrock of the SIem Reap river atop a mountain, some 25 km from Siem Reap. In addition you have scores of carvings on the rocks beside the river as well. Though many of the sculptures have been vandalized and damaged, or have been damaged due to weathering, the carved idols still retain their original sanctity and charm. I'd read somewhere that the graduates of Artisans d'Angkor have managed to reproduce some portions of Kbal Spean's missing bas reliefs, though which are the replicas are not indicated. Here is a comparatively dry patch of bedrock where the carvings are seen. Since these are held sacred by the locals, the area is fenced off and one cannot step onto the bedrock proper. Not to mention the risks involved, especially considering the 2.5km trek downhill and the long distance to the nearest hospital. Detailed notes and more pictures of the site, including of the 1000 lingas appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (Siem Reap, Cambodia, Oct. 2008) |
