説明 | The sandstone lingams on the bedrock have given Kbal Spean the name Valley (or River) of the 1000 Lingas. The lingas (the Hindu phallic symbol) are the bun shaped things you see in the foreground. The square pool you see at the centre is probably a damaged or vandalized version of the yoni (the vagina), which usually isn't too far from the linga. Located some 25 km away fro Siem Reap, Cambodia, and one of the scores of Angkor temples which dot the countryside around the town, Kbal Spean consists of a series of stone carvings in sandstone formations carved in the river bed and banks. The motifs for stone carvings are mainly myriads of lingams (phallic symbol of Hindu god Shiva), depicted as neatly arranged bumps that cover the surface of a sandstone bed rock, and lingam- yoni (the vagina) designs. Other sculptures carved on the river bed and rocks on the river banks depict many Hindu mythological scenes and symbols. There are also inscriptions which get exposed as the water level in the river decreases. The common theme of these sculptures emphasizes creation as defined in Hindu mythology in the form of the Hindu god Vishnu lying on a serpent in a reclining repose on the ocean of milk in mediation, the lotus flower emerging from Vishnu’s navel which bears the Hindu god Brahma, the creator. The river flows through several sculpted reliefs of Shiva the destroyer shown in the universal symbol of the Linga; 1000 such lingas have been carved in the bed of the river. The Hindu god Vishnu is also carved to match the contours of the river bed and banks. A carving of Shiva with his consort Uma is also visible. I can't say I noticed all of these- I did see some of them though. In the absence of a guide, I probably did not even know that some of these sculptures existed here in the first place. More notes about Kbal Spean appeared earlier in this album (see previous pictures) and will also appear later as we go along in this album. (see subsequent pictures).
