説明 | I was fascinated by the hard working ants on the Kbal Spean trail. I am in Siem Reap, Cambodia on my first solo trip after a rather traumatic breakup. I have come here to check out the Angkor era temples, scores of which dot the countryside around Siem Reap. Here I am on the 2.5 km uphill trail to Kbal Spean, also known as the River (or Valley) of the 1000 lingaas, to check out the Angkor era carvings on the bedrock of the Siem Reap river atop the mountain. Although you are climbing all the time on that 2.5 km trail- you are going up a mountain after all- the gradient is fairly mild (was for me in 2008 when I was twelve years younger at least!) but there are a couple of nasty patches, including one where one has to climb atop a massive rock straddled across the trail and clamber back down again. Add to that the deathly silence- I was all alone on the trail- coupled with the isolation and the dense bush on either side of the trail was the fatigue after doing those nasty bits. I had to pause often, notwithstanding, to rest my muscles and to catch my breath. On one of these brief halts, I spotted this line of soldier ants going about their normal work. Here is another picture of the soldier ants, this time with more light. A real hard working bunch they are: they really encouraged me to press on. Sometimes it's these small things in nature which really fascinate you. Notes about Kbal Spean appear later as we go along in this album.(Siem Reap, Cambodia, Oct. 2008) |
