説明 | Nearly 2000 distinctively rendered apsara (celestial maidens) carvings adorn the walls throughout the Angkor Wat temple and represent some of the finest examples of Apsara carvings in Angkorian era art. Such carvings are called bas reliefs. Integrated with the architecture of the building, and one of the causes for its fame is Angkor Wat's extensive decoration, which predominantly takes the form of bas-relief friezes. The inner walls of the outer gallery bear a series of large-scale scenes mainly depicting episodes from the Hindu epics the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Basically, the Angkor Wat architects employed small Apsara images 12 – 16 inches as decorative motifs on the temple's pillars and walls. They incorporated larger devata (Hindu god) images (all full-body portraits measuring approximately 37 –43 in more prominently at every level of the temple from the entry pavilion to the tops of the high towers. detailed notes about the Angkor Wat temple appear throughout this album. (see previous and subsequent pictures). (Siem Reap, Cambodia, Oct. 2008) |
