| 説明 | A visit to the Dorset town of Shaftesbury - home of Gold Hill.Briefly near Shaftesbury Abbey (I wanted to go to Gold Hill - anyway we didn't want to go into the abbey ruins).Founded by King Alfred the Great in 888.Shaftesbury Abbey was the first religious house for women. Alfred's daughter Aethelgifu was it's first abbess.In 979 Edward, King and Martyr was burried here.In 1035 King Canute died here.In 1539 on King Henry VIII's orders it was closed (during the Reformation).The Abbey was closed in 1539 by order of Henry VIII and the church and buildings around the cloister dismantled - the stone being reused in other local buildings. A large section of the Abbey's precinct wall remains in Gold Hill.The wall surrounding the ruins is Grade II listed.Wall Within Curtilage of Nos 17 and 19 High Street and Facing on to Park Walk, Shaftesbury 1. 1615 PARK WALK Boundary Wall flanking Park Walk on north side in curtilage of the following properties:- Nos 17 & 19 High Street, Nos 6 & 8 Church Lane, Priory House, Church Lane, and the remains of Shaftesbury Abbey. ST 8622 2/4A II 2. C18 possibly incorporating masonry from the medieval Abbey of Shaftesbury. Squared rubble masonry; stone coping. Approximately 8ft high. In eastern corner, and in north-east returning wall, which extends as far as King Alfred's Kitchen, Nos 6 and 8 Church Lane and Priory House in Church Lane [lower and without coping], and the Abbey of Shaftesbury.
