説明 | Amtrak Surfliner # 459, an EMD F59PHI, sits outside the San Diego, CA Amtrak Station waiting for an assignment. Taken by a Nikon D40x with a Nikon 18-55mm VR kit lens. (at 24)Amtrak keeps a spare locomotive here because they have no shops in or near the San Diego end of the Surfliner run, and they need a locomotive at the end of the run in case of breakdowns... ([for those who have never been on the Surfliner:] There is a particularly nasty single-tracked hill that the Surliner climbs, [and descends...] just north of the S.D. city limit - when a locomotive breaks down, it is usually on that hill! (and Surfliners are usually single-headed [one locomotive]) This locomotive's engine is off. (locomotives are usually left idleing when not in use...)I think that this practice of leaving a loco here for weeks at a time is the reason for the corrosion/rust problems I've noticed on Surfliner locomotives - this location is only two hundred yards from San Diego Bay... (a body of salt water. [brackish at best...]) See on the engine panels below the "Amtrak" on this locomotive for an example, although this locomotive's rust problem is mild compared to other Surfliner locomotives this photographer has seen... |
