| 説明 | Parting shot of large eclining Buddha image in Ayutthaya. This large Buddha was initially housed in a large chamber called the Wihan Phra Phuttha Saiyat, most of it sadly does not stand today, barring a wall behind the statue and a few bits and pieces.. Most Buddha statues show him in a sitting position, either preaching or meditating. It's comparatively uncommon to see reclining Buddha statues and rarer still to see the Buddha in a standing position. Although the basic concept of the Buddha is the same, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and other Buddhist countries each have their own representation of the Buddha in terms of headgear, embellishments etc. Some cultures show the Buddha with rather large ears. A reclining Buddha is an image that represents Buddha lying down and is a major iconographic theme in Buddhist art. It represents the historical Buddha during his last illness, about to enter the parinirvana. After the Buddha's death, his followers decided to build a statue of him lying down. This reclining Buddha statue is actually only part of a much larger complex called the Wat Yai Chaimongkol or The Monastery of Victory, but we will get there shortly. (see subsequent pictures later in this album). Incidentally, this is not the original reclining Buddha statue which was housed in Wihan Phra Phuttha Saiyat- rather this is a replica made in the 1960s. (Ayutthaya, Thailand, Oct. 2008) |
