It started raining and I found myself finding refuge in another bookshop (you'll often find me in such places). I settled in for the duration, and picked up a book I hadn't seen before, The Design of Sydney : Three Decades of Change in the City Centre, edited by G. P. Webber, and flicked through the pages. A few moments later I was staring at a small 'unidentified' photo used to illustrate the chapter on The Rocks - a photo I immediately recognized as the now demolished Matthew Place. The source was given as The Macleay Museum, and so I got in touch with them, both to pass on the identification, and in the hope they would let me post the photo to Flickr, as they previously did with a photo of Ferry Lane. After a bit of a needle in the haystack search (there was no reference no. in the Webber book) they found the photo on a page titled 'The Rocks Area' in the William Barratt Photograph Album, dated c.1910-1930.Oh, and of course I had to buy the book! |
