説明 | No, you are going to Burma yet. This is a short train line ahead of the plinthed steam locomotive no. 702 on the mountain top above the Saiyok Noi waterfall which you saw earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). This is part of the infamous Death Railway, built during WW-II by the Japanese between Thailand and Burma through dense jungle and inhospitable terrain, which led to the death of over one hundred thousand men from accident, starvation, disease and ill tratment by the Japanese. As a mark of respect to the dead, both Thailand and Japan agreed to dismantle 15 m of track in their respective territories on either side of the border. So this display line is part of the abandoned/ destroyed stretch of track into Burma. So no way you are going to reach Burma by rail. This is the end of the line, period. Burma is now lobbying to restore the rail link (2013) for economic reasons but it is doubtful if that will ever happen, as nothing much has come out of it yet (2020). At any rate a large dam on the line has submerged portions of the track so the route, if at all it materializes, will have to be re-aligned in part at least. Detailed notes about the Death Railway appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (Kanchanaburi, Thailand, Oct. 2008) |
