| 説明 | From Kington the path heads north crossing over the grounds of the golf course on Bradnor Hill (one of the highest golf courses in the country) to Rushock Hill where the clear remnants of Offa's Dyke are still visible. The dyke is followed on a switchback course for about a mile to descend to meet the road at Lower Harpton. The structure of the wall is quite low, it may have shrunk a bit over the long centuries since the original turfs and stones were heaved into place marking the boundary of Offa's lands. Offa's Dyke was built about 800 years after the Roman Legions abandoned their great northern dyke: Hadrian's Wall, but the defensive technology seems to have changed little over the intervening centuries, build a wall and run a ditch alongside it, that's the way to do it. Legend has it that a Welshman straying over the border into England would lose his ears, but an Englishman caught on the wrong side of the wall would lose his life! exchange rates are still as puzzling today... |
