説明 | It was a special moment in Yeovilton's AIr Day (2010), when the Vulcan landed after an awe inspiring display and it was towed near the crowd. XH558 has been restored (to flying condition, albeit with a somewhat trimmed flight envelope :-) ) primarily through contributions from the public. This picture was taken as the commentator was making this exact remark and is meant to reflect the support of the crowd that gathers underneath it.Avro's Vulcan was created amidst the Cold War and its primary mission was to deliver a devastating nuclear weapon (the Blue Steel) to its target, going into supersonic flight on its way back to avoid the nuclear blast. I am not sure what it was supposed to "come back to" considering the fact that in a nuclear war there are no winners. It is very discomforting to think about the piles of money and infrastructure that was shed into this idea of building towards the threat of an all out nuclear war (by all parties in this game) that would threaten the very existence of the game's "players".Nevertheless, the Vulcan, as an aircraft, is a significant step in the development of aviation as the first aircraft to employ fly-by-wire (with the option of turning the feedback off!!!!), the many stages of the development of the delta wing for supersonic flight in an era that supersonic aviation was still at its infancy and the development of the Olympus engines. Most of these advancements (minus the nuclear payload), re-appeared in another significant step forward, the Concorde. |
