説明 | www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w1LkfgE0qALoud Thoughts at the Prince Albert MemorialIt’s always an awkward moment:some enthusiast at a gameI cannot fathom wavesa Union Jack. I think ofAmritsar, the Irish Famine, concentration camps filledwith twenty-seven-thousandBoers, and English boyslining up for bayonetsand the Somme. And there you are, plinthedand magnificent, surmountedby pinnacles of gold, as camels – symbolising Africa –endure the English weather,Asian elephants prostratethemselves under nubiletopless wenches, a bisonbows his head besidethe Noble Savage, as thoughBuffalo Bill was never born, and Europa does her bestalthough it’s all a load of bull. And still you gaze across the fugof London, your eyes ablazewith zeal for British industry,British religion, British disease, bearing dutifully the White Man’sBurden, and doing it allso beautifully. Times haven’tchanged. They’re still doinga roaring trade inUnion Jacks. Look:can you see the CrystalPalace burning down?Poem by Giles Watson, 2012.More pictures below. |
