| 説明 | Three days ago, Steve Seigel rescued a Green Heron that had been tangled in fishing line. He rescued it and brought it to Pelican Harbor Seabird Station in Miami. Today it was pronounced ready for release. I met Steve at the heron rookery where he found it. The little heron flew across the canal and immediately began drinking water. It then rested along the bank just under one of the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron nests.There had been two pairs of Green Herons along the canal in the rookery area. One pair has a nest with eggs at the north end. The other pair generally ranged to the south, After the heron was taken to rehab, i noticed an unattached single Gren Heron at the south end. One of the herons from the pair with a nest chased it away when it flew near their nest. i suspect this is the mate of the bird that had been trapped. I watched the released heron for about a half hour, but it never moved very far south from where it was released. I found and photographed a second Green Heron in a thick patch of brush along the canal where a pair nested last year, but I could not see a nest. Earlier today my observation of the rookery was cut short by rain. This afternoon I repeated the census and now have found another Yellow-crowned Night-Heron nest, for a total of seven nesting pairs, plus three immature birds and possibly a 15th unattached male Yellow-crowned N-H. I revised the nest locating system to make it more exact, assigning fractions to those nests located in between the marker trees. Visit blog.rosyfinch.com |
