説明 | Description and Transcription from Henry Paget-Lowe (Juha-Matti Rajala):[This is the recto of the first sheet a letter from HPL to EHP of 4-7 May 1935:]Ancient Kingsport—May 4Hail, O Malik!Behold me in the centuried lanes of hoary Marblehead—prototype of Kingsport—in the course of a week-end outing & visit. Weather was rotten yesterday, but today is sunny . . . though not as warm as I’d like. In a borrowed longcoat, however, I’m all right—& I’m endeavouring to keep up with my neglected correspondence by writing (as I usually do) between sightseeing glances. Am sitting just now in my worthy host’s Juggernaut—but later paragraphs may be written in one or another of the harbour-overlooking parts of this fascinating & venerable town (which dates from about 1639). I suppose I’ve described Marblehead to you many times before, so that you are no stranger to its crooked alleys, precipitous hill streets, & 18th century gambrel-roofed houses perched at irresponsible angles on rock cliffs & surprising slopes. There’s no other place like it in creation—& I like it best at this time of year, before self-conscious summer people & “art” colonists begin to clutter it up. Spring—of a sort—is here despite the chill of today. Trees & shrubs in feathery green, & {illegible} of yellow. Here in Mass., though, the season is not as well advanced as in R.I. They have a hellish east wind here which we don’t get. My host is the pleasant Edward H. Cole whom I’ve mentioned to you before—one of the old-time amateur crowd, though he won’t be at the Oakland convention. Teacher of English & of Am. history in Chauncy Hall School, which prepares boys for M.I.T. I may have mentioned his household of felidae—grave grey & white Napoleon, lean, tiger Wellington, & tiger-angora Peter Ivanovitch Romanoff . . . who has grown to huge size since last August, & whose battles with the Iron Duke are epical in their intensity. If these warriors ever united in a common cause, I’ll wager they could give even Nimrod a tough tussle!Well—I read your epistle & postcard bulletins with the keenest of pleasure, & sincerely envy you the Yosemite trip. Scenic grandeur is something with which I am almost unacquainted at first-hand—a glimpse of the White Mts. & ascent of Mt. Washington by cog-wheel railway in 1927 being my only {?approximation} of it. I have, of course seen pictures & read descriptions of the Yosemite—but such can hardly convey more than a faint shadow of the real thing. El Capitan—3604 feet above {?3090} feet floor—must be a tremendous sight. I once revised a poem describing—or purporting to describe—it.Congrats on old Jug’s renovation! Hope the eastern trip will materialise in course of time. A tour with Dictaphone & all the trimmings—combining work & pleasure—would surely be a great idea . . . . Though it’s a pity such peregrination couldn’t be accomplished in the faithful Jug of yore!Glad Pawang & his brethren are prospering, & hope their various {illegible} & {?slaughtering} may soon have that mortgage & all other obligations disposed of. As for Satrap Pharnabazus & his caprices—he has long been past my explaining. Your were-leopard tale sounds to me like a tremendous improvement on the silver-bullet stuff—indeed, your explanation of the natue of the phenomenon is precisely like that offered back in [. . . the 2nd (and only other available) page page is here: www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/6797828268/ in/photostream/] |
