Of course, I have no guarantee that I could write real literature under even the most favourable conditions—but at least I can try to rid myself of conspicuous handicaps. I’m not so much influenced by what I do in a revisory way.Apropos of nothing—couldn’t you substitute your improved version of the detective tale for the one recently accepted? It seems to me that Ive made changes in accepted MSS. & had them incorporated. The editor might be glad of the substitution. I’d certainly try it!About Randolph Carter—as I said before, I hope you’re in no hurry, because the thing must be done under reposeful conditions if at all. I may flop miserably—but if I feel myself flopping too badly I’ll send the whole works on to Klarkash-Ton, High-Priest of Tsathoggua, & see what a third hand can do. What I’ll send you first (god help you, my son!) will not be a carbon but a vively scrawled rough draught in my worse-than-Amharic cursive (& cursed!) script—because I hate typing too damn badly to do it for nothing. There’ll be no typing for Grandpa till the whole thing is settled. Just one session—no more!As for your all-rights cheque—I don’t know whether you were wise or not in taking it as it was . . . . provided the change to as 1st. N. A. would not have endangered the acceptance. I am reminded of this by the letter which has just came from London, stating that an editor wants to buy British periodical rights to my “Erich Zann” in “Creeps by Night”. This will make the third sale since W.T. took it—the fourth in all.
