説明 | Tom Burnham, NRCS District Conservationist for Lane County, Ore. (right) and Curt McKinney, the consulting forester who manages this parcel of forestland near the Eugene, Ore. area, inspect an abandoned dusky-footed woodrat nest. These forest-dwelling rats were threatening to decimate production in some of the forestland areas Curt manages. In areas, the rats were girdling up to 70 trees per acre that were either killing the trees or topping them negatively impacting the health of this forest. From McKinney’s observations, EQIP-funded pre-commercial thinning helped reduce the forest stand density making it difficult for woodrats to travel easily from tree to tree. The thinning practice mimicked a more natural stand structure, appeared to reduce the spread of rat nests in the trees, and forced the rats to travel on the ground allowing natural predators such as foxes and owls thin the populations to reasonable levels. For the full story and other NRCS Oregon related information, go to www.or.nrcs.usda.gov/news/showcase/index.html |
