説明The central light of Whall's three-light traceried window of 1900 entitled "The Adoration of the Magi and the Shepherds"Whall’s triptych format window centres upon the dark outline of the thatched roof of the stable with its four vertical posts. This outine spills over into the left and right hand side panels/lights. Down through this central panel a huge shaft of silvery-white light runs down from the Star of Bethlehem and onto the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child and in an arc of light just below the stable roof are the faces of child angels. Thus the dark outline of the stable roof is juxtaposed brilliantly with the shaft of light and all that that shaft reveals. The left-hand light of the window shows a kneeling King who has unbuckled his sword and laid it down on the ground as he pays homage to the Christ Child. Behind him stands a young male attendant who holds a silver casket containing his master’s offering. An angel stands behind the attendant with his arm around the boy’s shoulder. The Angel, presumably St Michael the Archangel, has red wings and a pink halo. The Angel wears armour and holds a lance in his left hand from which hangs a banner of white with a red cross. In the central panel/ light Christ holds out His right hand to touch the crown of one of the two kneeling kings. The King in turn kisses the foot of the Christ Child. On the ground is his offering, a gold thurible containing frankincense. To his left the other kneeling King is depicted as an African and wears an elaborate turbaned headdress. He holds up a gold casket in both hands. Behind the figures is a wattle fence behind which is an ox and an ass. Along the base of this light is the inscription “To the dear memory of Edmund Harvey”.The right-hand light shows a group of five Shepherds who all face the Virgin and Child. They are accompanied by an angel. In the foreground is a bearded, white-haired shepherd who kneels whilst holding a lamb and a crook in his left arm. He wears a green plaid cloak and brown boots and gaiters. Behind him are three younger kneeling figures. There is a young girl in a brown spotted dress who offers a crown made of pink flowers, a man in a brown smock, who clutches his hat in both hands in front of him, and a young boy in a brown coat. To their right a youth plays a pipe. He wears a countryman’s hat and embroidered brown smock. To his right a red-winged Angel completes the group and she also holds a pipe. Along the base of this light is the second part of the inscription “Who died August 24th 1898.”
