[taken during the 2004-2005 NHL lockout]UPDATE: This mural has since been painted over, leaving just a blank white space where the Captain used to stand watch over his city. Before the Yzerman mural went up, a large Barry Sanders/Nike mural had occupied the space.UPDATE 2: Prior to the 2005 MLB All-Star Game at Comerica Park, the space was repainted as an ad for the new Pontiac Solstice convertible. There goes the tradition of having a Detroit sports hero on a mural downtown (Barry Sanders preceded Stevie Y).UPDATE 3: July 3, 2006 – The Captain announces his retirement from the Wings. Our generation's Gordie Howe has taken his last shift with the Winged Wheel on his sweater. I suddenly feel a little short-handed. |
