説明 | Check out those resin glands. This species smells like Cupressus bakeri, the Siskiyou cypress from Northern California, but it is idiotically classified as a "variant" of Arizona Cypress. Not sure which Nobel laureate botanist decided that this was merely a variant of a species that looks and smells completely unrelated, but it's a bogus call. I've now finally seen and studied all 12 species of California Cypress in the wild, and this one is one of the most fragrant, the other two very fragrant species being macnabiana and bakeri. They are all three very closely related. An incredible genus. Here's to you, Cupressus! And to Carl B. Wolf, as well! |
