説明 | The longest line at GDC was for Will Wright's (Sim City, The Sims, etc) talk. And boy was it worth it. Easily the best talk of this or ANY GDC I've been to. Really inspiring. He demoe'd Spore, his latest game (or toy, really.) An evolution game where you start out as an ameoba, and end up a ruler of the universe. Ever seen that cool "powers of ten" science video they used to show on TV 10 years ago? Like that. You could zoom from a microbe out to a galaxy. No shit. The guy is a fucking genius. I am so glad to have had the opportunity of being in attendance. Only about 1/4 of the line made it into the room before it filled to capacity (which is really lame of the GDC coordinators, by the way.)He ended the talk with this thought: During the creation of Spore, he found that the only true constraint he ran up against was the limits of his own imagination. Not technology, not team size, not any of other excuses I heard so much about from others during the rest of the conference. Just his *own* ability to conquer the fear of the unknown, stretch his own imagination beyond its breaking point, and create something new and amazing. It was very refreshing to hear something other than the general whining I heard too many times during this conference: "how can we cope with the rising complexity of game development!? What are we gonna do?!" |
