説明 | A view of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial. Originally known as the Hemicycle, this ceremonial entrance to Arlington National Cemetery was opened in 1932. Along the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the George Washington Memorial Parkway (then known as the Mount Vernon Memorial Parkway), it was constructed in celebration of the bicentennial of George Washington's birthday. Unfinished, unused, and in disrepair by the early 1980s, it was transformed into the Women in Military Service for America Memorial and opened to the public on October 20, 1997. This image was taken inside one of the stairwells which pierces the front of the Hemicycle and leads up to the terrace on top of the memorial. This stairwell is the one on the south side nearest the apse. The photographer is looking south into the exhibit galleries inside the memorial. The sides of the stairwells are lined with glass on each side, and the exhibit galleries inside the memorial are visible through this glass. The marble wall to the right holds back the artificial hill behind the memorial, underneath which are located more exhibit space, a theater, a gift shop, conference rooms, and memorial offices. The grate-like overhangs to the left of the image are attached to the original interior wall of the Hemicycle, help to break up the space inside the exhibit gallery, and block off different exhibit areas below them. |
